The Hendrick Motorsports CEO Marshall Carlson said that Fernández visited yesterday their garage to get used to a car with a completely different structure, and make an effort for this only race.
Carlson also said “”We are hoping he will make quite a show for his fans in Mexico City . Everyone in Hendrick Motorsports will enjoys working with Adrian and we are looking forward to see him race”.
The Lowe’s directors commented that the sponsorship of Fernández towards the Mexico City race, is an opportunity to align the Lowe’s brand with a local hero, making also special promotions around the Mexican driver several markets.
“Lowe’s is proud to participate in the first NASCAR race in Mexico with a world class athlete like Adrián Fernández,” Commented the senior vice president of Lowe’s Bob Geller. “Throughout the race program from the Lowe’s team, the brand can communicate with a wide range of our clients. We are anxious for this race”.
Fernández is a web known name amongst racing fans. He started in Moro Cross racing at the age of 8 in Mexico. He ran in formula cars in Mexico and Europe before joining CART in 1993, won 8 times and got 21 podiums during the 2003 season. In 2004 the Fernández Racing Team joined the Indy Racing League, were he won three races including two of the last three in the season.
In Mexico he is the N°1 driver. He was nominated for the National Sports Award in 2004 for his lifetime motor sports achievements. He has won several awards
including “Athlete of the Year” in Mexico, plus he was recently recognized by Fox Sports for his contributions in Latin-American motor sports. Fernández will join Kyle Busch, Blake Feese and Boston Reid driving all No. 5 Lowe's Busch car in 2005. Jim Long is the teams chief engineer. This team won the 2003 NASCAR Busch Series Championship with Brian Vickers on the wheel and ended second last season with driver Kyle Busch.
The Hendrick Motorsports, the Lowe’s representatives and Adrian will unveil the Lowe's / Hitachi Power Tools Chevrolet No. 5 and will meet with the press at Daytona next Thursday February 17.
The “ Telcel-Motorola Mexico 200 presented by Banamex” that will be held in a permanent circuit at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez around 80 laps, marks the first occasion that the NASCAR Busch Series will run a road course, since 2001 in Watkins Glen (New York) International.
